SPOKANE INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT AND EAST SPOKANE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION RECEIVE EXCELLENCE ON MAIN AWARD


SPOKANE, WA - May 24, 2011 -The Spokane International District and the East Spokane Business Association were honored with an Excellence on Main award“Outstanding Partnership” Award at the Excellence on Main Awards Ceremony, May 12 in Walla Walla.

The Spokane International District was launched in 2009 as part of Impact Capital’s Vibrant Communities initiative. The program works with partners on the ground to strengthen neighborhood commercial districts, increase public safety and cleanliness, create parks and open space, improve educational opportunities and help families build assets.

Under the Vibrant Communities model, creative partnerships are formed to target specific issues including infrastructure, safety, cleanliness, and business growth. Stakeholders, including business owners, civic leaders, residents, and non-profit organizations, work together to bring about key changes necessary to create a vibrant and desirable district.

Excellence on Main award recipientsThis comprehensive approach to revitalization has already produced results including a marketing and branding program, infrastructure upgrades, clean-up projects, increased safety, and new businesses. In addition, the district has secured its first mixed-use housing project and guidelines are being developed to preserve the unique character of the area.

On May 16, 2011 the district was also recognized at the City Council Meeting and received a certificate of recognition from the Mayor’s Office. “I am, as always, in awe of your drive, leadership, partnership and commitment to your community, preserving its historic past and building a bright future,” says Spokane City Council Member Amber Waldref. “This award is well deserved recognition of all your hard work and positive results,” added Andy Billig, 3rd District Representative.
