SPOKANE, WA – Residents and visitors of the East Central Neighborhood will notice eighteen new brightly colored banners along Sprague Avenue and throughout the district’s commercial corridor. Emblazoned with the Spokane International District’s logo, the banners serve to clearly define and identify the commercial corridor as the new Spokane International District and are key first step in transforming the district into a vibrant community. The commercial corridor of the East Central Neighborhood, now known as the Spokane International District, lies between Helena Street and Crestline on the West and East, the railroad tracks to the north and Interstate 90 to the South, and contains a mix of small businesses, light industrial and single family homes.
This area has experienced significant disinvestment over the past few years creating empty and underutilized buildings and impairing the ability of small businesses to attract new customers and expand. The banners are one of the first steps in an action plan for neighborhood revitalization launched by Impact Capital in partnership with the City of Spokane and SNAP through Impact Capital’s Vibrant Communities Program. Vibrant Communities is a place based revitalization strategy that addresses the range of physical, economic and social conditions to improve the overall quality of life and economic opportunities for neighborhood residents. The goal of the program is to support the development of the Spokane International District into a community where people want to live, work, do business and raise families.
Measuring 36” by 94 ¼”, the banners feature the district’s name and distinctive logo against bright vibrant colors, and can be exchanged with seasonally themed banners during the fall holidays. The banners help accomplish the goals of the Vibrant Communities Spokane project by visually designating the Spokane International District and ultimately resulting in a more attractive, pedestrian friendly business district that draws more customers for existing small businesses and the creation of a supportive environment for international, cultural and artistic events and celebrations. Additionally, they serve to increase the marketability of vacant and under-utilized buildings and attract new business and business expansion while generally providing a new, positive image for the neighborhood.
