Impact Capital Receives $15,000 Grant to Support Vibrant Communities in Spokane

SPOKANE, WA - February 19, 2010 - The Inland Northwest Community Foundation (INWCF) has provided Impact Capital with a $15,000 grant to support the organization's Vibrant Communities program in the Spokane International District. Vibrant Communities is a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization program that operates in several Seattle neighborhoods and was recently launched in Spokane in May of 2009. The community foundation's funding will enable Impact Capital to focus on creating and sustaining affordable housing, a vibrant commercial district, and building community capacity in the Spokane International District.

In 2009, partnering with the City of Spokane, Impact Capital implemented a comprehensive effort to increase the vitality of a district within the East Central Spokane neighborhood, now the Spokane International District. "This grant will help the community reach many of the goals outlined in the Neighborhood Action Plan," stated Heyward Watson, CEO of Impact Capital. "We are excited about having the funding to help us work with the stakeholders to create things like a community safety program and redevelop and create about 100 units of affordable housing." The goal is to support the development of the Spokane International District into a community where people want to live, work, do business and raise families.

"This grant will allow us to work with our partner on the ground, SNAP, to begin implementation of the plan's action items centered on safety, housing and business recruitment," said Impact Capital Program Officer Terri Symbol. "Within the first six months the plan is to open an office on Sprague Avenue, install street banners and have at least two new international businesses located within the commercial district. Working closely with our community partners we will show how the Vibrant Communities approach can improve the quality of life in a neighborhood." The grant also enables Impact Capital to continue to provide technical assistance and training, which has strengthened the neighborhood's ability to continue to revitalize the district into the future.

"The goal of Impact Capital's Vibrant Communities program aligns well with the community foundation mission. We are pleased to partner with Impact Capital and the City of Spokane in this effort," says Linda Graham, director of grants at INWCF.
