On September 28, 2009, Impact Capital hosted the "Angels andDemons" friend-raiser as part of the Housing Washington Conference in Spokane to raise funds for Vibrant Communities Spokane International District, a neighborhood revitalization initiative in East Central Spokane. Over 250 people attended the fun-filled reception to benefit the neighborhood program and support Impact Capital's and local lead agency SNAP's efforts.
Guests played trivia, purchased raffle tickets, and drank signature cocktails while learning about the work being done to turn the Spokane International District into a thriving business district and cultural neighborhood. The funds raised from the event will be used to support Impact Capital's Vibrant Communities initiative, including the purchase of street banners and the production of the Neighborhood Action Plan. This plan, which will be debuted in the coming months, contains a variety of community-designed action items to be completed in a short-, mid- and long-term timeframes over a three to five year period.
"Our experience has shown us that comprehensive approaches to revitalization efforts work, but only if you involve diverse stakeholder groups who can take ownership of the plan for change," said Heyward Watson, Chief Executive Officer of Impact Capital. "Our job is to garner support and provide guidance, along with the local lead agency, SNAP."
SNAP Executive Director Larry Stuckart spoke about the group's work and plans for the Spokane International District at the event and said that the Neighborhood Action Plan is a crucial part of any Vibrant Communities Initiative. "During the development of this plan, Impact Capital provides high-touch support," said Tracy Reich, Senior Program Officer at Impact Capital. "We help the stakeholders create the plan by providing direct consulting and technical assistance services to the lead agency to support it in establishing action steps and timeframes." Additional resources that Impact Capital offers to the process include trainings, grant support, connections to other consulting resources, local and national expertise, and access to other neighborhoods undergoing similar efforts. Since 1995, Impact Capital has invested more than $4 million into the City of Spokane; these funds have targeted the development of 708 units of housing for families earning up to 80% of area median income (AMI). In addition to capital investments through our Lending Program, Impact Capital has provided thousands of dollars in direct investments and technical support resources in Spokane to nonprofit community development organizations. "Our friend-raiser was a success. It enabled people to have a great time and support an organization that has been working to build-up an underserved neighborhood into the cultural destination it wants to become," said Magda Herrera, Senior Fund Development and Communications Officer at Impact Capital. "Our trivia contest, which featured questions on Angels, Demons, Washington's housing industry and Impact Capital, got people excited and helped raised funds for Vibrant Communities."
